Markets

What is a Farmers’ Market?

They are co-ordinated events where stall holders attend who only sell products which have been produced in nearby areas. There may be occasions where products can not be obtained in the area, such as Olives. Here local suppliers of high quality attend by invitation only by market management.

Shopping at a Farmers’ Market supports the local rural economy and cuts ‘food miles’ to an absolute minimum. You’ll also find unique products that will not be available in supermarkets.

You’ll find the stall holders are the actual producers or relations/employees so can give you direct advice about the origins and uses for their products.

Getting up early on a Saturday morning isn’t everyone’s cup of tea...

Most Farmers’ Markets open at around 9am. The busiest markets have often sold out of some vegetables and meat items by lunchtime so it can be important to get there early.

Do a little research before you set off:

  • Check you have the correct week - most markets are on a set week in the month. (Sounds obvious but it’s easy to get caught out!). Big Barn is a great site to find out where and when markets are taking place - just enter your postcode.
  • Directions - Try Google’s new interactive maps.
  • Where the car park is and how much it costs (or maybe leave the car at home!)
  • Information about local suppliers situated near the market that could help you complete your shopping list, such as organic supermarkets or health food shops.

Go Prepared:

  • Weekly shopping list - you will be surprised how many essential items can be found at the markets
  • Plenty of change is always handy as some of the stall holders may only be able to accept cash.
  • Yes, they do still run if its raining!
